University College London conducted a study among older adults (65+) to investigate an association between low Vitamin D Levels and respiratory diseases like COPD, asthma, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis and TB.

The study concluded that those individuals with lower Vitamin D levels had twice the risk of respiratory disease. Even a moderate deficiency has increased risk for respiratory diseases.

To read more about the study you can visit The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.  The study concluded that mature populations living in northern latitudes need additional Vitamin D as an effective way to help prevent complications from respiratory disease.  The study also states that further studies are required to investigate whether Vitamin D supplements can replicate what the body does naturally when exposed to UV light.
